I made it up to my favorite place on Cornell's campus last night. I like to walk across the Olin Library patio and kick stones across it. They make this really cool sound bouncing off the pavers. I affectionately refer to them as the "musical stones." When I was a student at CU, everytime I had a first date with someone from out of town I would take them on a tour of campus at night, and we'd always end up at the "musical stones." And... if they thought they were as cool as I did, it was a very good sign. :-) Last night I also walked back downtown (must have been about 11:30 by the time I was done on campus). I love walking on the Commons at night. Everything just looks so different. It takes me three times as long to walk on the commons at night than it does in the afternoon. I walk THAT slow, taking time to appreciate all the shadows. It feels like the commons is almost some sort of diorama, with painted cardboard store fronts. Nothing really has depth like it does during the day. And the only light is coming from the commons itself, not above, so it feels like there's a ceiling over your head. You can almost convince yourself that you're the only "real" thing in the world and everything else is just cardboard. Ok, enough of my ode to two of my favorite things.
