Why don't you have a driver's license? I get asked this question all the time. And the simple answer is... I just never got around to getting it. The longer answer sounds like I'm trying to make excuses... but here goes. Essentially I lived alone in High School. Mom moved in with her boyfriend and let me stay in our apartment. (I put my foot down not wanting to change schools yet ANOTHER time growing up. And unlike similar instances in the past, this time I got my way.) So without a parent to teach me to drive (Dad had moved to NC by this point) and with a guidance counsellor that thought I should take AP Bio over Driver's Ed ("because it looks better on your transcript and there's a waiting list for Driver's Ed anyway") I never got my license before I went to Cornell. Once at Cornell they strongly encouraged students not to have cars, parking on campus is hell and expensive. And I got lucky and found a job within walking distance of my apartment in Ithaca. Until recently I haven't been much of a traveller, so I really have never lamented not having a driver's license. Plus, I save TONS of money not having a car payment, insurance, and frequent trips to the gas station. It's never really been an issue for me. People look at me a little oddly at first but folks get over it. *grin* Let me know if that answers your question? *grin* | private feedback | |
