You know those people that turn into awkward messes when they have a crush on someone? Well, I'm one of them. Friday after work I went home and called the Ithaca Sports Bar guy... I left such a rambling message about going to the movie and then I think I mentioned a "B-plan"... *deep sigh* By the end of the message I don't remember what I was saying. Gay or straight, this man will probably never return that phone call. I can't say that I blame him. :-( The movie (13 Conversations About One Thing) was pretty good... very thought provoking. All of the characters had multiple seemingly insignificant things happen to them that affected the rest of their lives forever. I guess the point is to make us ask ourselves how every little thing we do (or don't do) affects us for the rest of our lives. In one case it was the difference between smiling and waving at or avoiding the eyes of a stranger. Actually the more I'm typing about it and thinking about it, the better movie it was... in hindsight. I love that type of movie... the ones that are good when you think about them later. Saturday I got up later than normal. Mike called practically the minute I rolled out of bed. About a month earlier we had gotten coupons to get a Mocha Freeze at Borders Cafe for 25 cents. So we organized an entire afternoon centered around cashing in our coupons. We'd go get something to eat at the Mall, walk around a bit to let our food settle (and make room for the Mocha Freeze), and then get our Mocha Freeze which would hopefully cool us down enough to find a shaded tennis court someplace and play a game. So that's what we did. I think we found the only shaded court in the county... up on Cornell's north campus. We started out a little rusty but by the end we were able to volley back and forth. We finally gave up the court when a line started forming. Rodney called later in the evening and I decided to go with him to the Common Ground. "But, Shane, you hate the Common Ground." Yeah, yeah, I know, but Cheri was pretty sure she'd still be out and I hadn't seen Rodney for a while. And... Mikey was DJing. (He's getting very good!) It was the day of the Women's Music Festival, so I figured all my lesbian friends would still be out drinking and having a good time. (Trust me, I went for the company, not the place.) I hate to admit it, but I had a blast! You know I love my lesbians. And the Common Ground was full of them Saturday night! It was nearly like being in a lesbian bar. There were maybe six guys and TONS of women. I met at least ten new lesbians... :-) Woohoo! There is something about me that cries out to lesbians I've never met before -- "pull me onto the dance floor" or "come up and randomly start talking to me." Seriously, me and lesbians have this chemistry goin' on. I can't meet a guy for chrissakes, but new lesbians are sure to LOVE me. I've said it once and I'll say it again... if I were a lesbian I would never go date-less. Saturday I *did* meet this nice couple (of boys) from Seneca Falls. That was cool. My friend Terri tries to be helpful. If she sees someone she thinks I'd be interested in she'll go right up to them and introduces herself... and me along with her. Of course she couldn't have known the guys were there together. :-) It was a valiant effort and I have two new acquaintances... nothing to complain about. Yesterday, I had my second driving lesson with Lori. After dropping Keelinn off at the YMCA for a birthday party, we took the car down to the high school parking lot. I still cannot get starting and stopping down with a standard. I stall way more often than I can smoothly get into motion. ("You're not giving it enough gas." "No, this time I think you were too fast on the clutch.") When I get moving though it's not a big deal... But in the real world we have things like stop signs and traffic lights. They're going to be the death of me. The one hysterical thing that happened during my lesson was that I got stuck in this dead-end narrow part of the parking lot... and so I thought... "No biggie, I'll practice a three point turn" Well wouldn't you know it, at exactly this moment a red van pulls up behind us (there had been NO traffic in the entire parking lot until right now) so I have no option but to try and QUICKLY do a three point turn... did I mention it was a standard? So, I backed up, nearly missing the curb behind me and then pulled forward, again in a hurry to get out of this person's way... I didn't turn the wheel sharply enough and ended up with the front right tire up on the curb. I screamed some obscenity ("BITCHES!") and Lori and I started laughing hysterically... I swear we almost wet ourselves. Here we were, sitting with one wheel on the curb, laughing. The guy in the red van clearly thought we were nuts... he maneuvered around us and left. I let my foot off the brakes and we rolled off the curb as I was trying to put the car in reverse. It was the perfect parking job, although I highly doubt that I'd pass the driving test with it. Only slightly traumatized, I drove around a bit more before we called it a day. Let's see... what else did I do yesterday? OH YEAH! I did laundry. How is laundry noteworthy? I got hit on while I was at the laundromat! Yee-Haw! By a girl. :-) She was super cute, a senior at IC... she kept tripping over herself to tell me how outgoing and personable I was... it was really adorable. And everytime I got up to do something (fold laundry, check the dryer) she'd follow me. *grin* Then she said, "We should get together sometime." I said, "Yeah, you should meet my boyfriend. I'm sure you'd like him too." (Of course I DON'T have a boyfriend, but I had to say *something,* and that was all I could think of.) "You're WHAT?" she said as if she didn't hear me right. I repeated myself and she suddenly got red in the face and went to check her clothes. :-) Otherwise my Sunday evening was pretty uneventful. I am reading this book called FAST FOOD NATION by Eric Schlosser. So far, I'm only about four chapters in but it's amazing. If you didn't know already how evil fast food companies are, you need to pick up a copy of this book. The jury is still out as to whether it will affect my dining habits, but there has been more than one instance while page-turning where I've been utterly disgusted by the policies of fast food restaurants. The book talks about everything from labor, to the manufactured taste of the food, to the history, how fast food companies have affected urban development and contributed to sprawl, and how restaurants help spread "american cultural imperialism" abroad. And you've probably figured out that I'm a random-trivia-fact whore... this book is full of them! Who knew that Willard Scott (the famed weatherman) was the inspiration behind Ronald McDonald and he actually thought up the name for the mascot? Well... now you know. | private feedback | |
