 Far From Heaven
I finally got to see Far From Heaven last night. What an amazing movie! Dealing with two very big issues, sexuality and racism... in the late 1950's. Sexuality is played out in a very private way... Julianne Moore plays a housewife who discovers her husband (Dennis Quaid) in the embrace of another man and decides to keep it between the two of them, hoping against hope that her husband can change. In the community and among close friends, the couple is revered as 'Mr. and Mrs. Perfect,' hosting extravagent parties and posing in print ads together... While her husband grows distant dealing with his own demons, she begins a very public friendship with her gardener, a black gentleman, in a time when this is absolutely unacceptable for a white woman to do. Sparks fly, controversy begins to swirl when the two are seen together at various places by 'society women' and they realize that their two worlds can't coexist in this time and place. Through both instances, Julianne Moore's character has to come to terms with the disconnect between reality and best intentions. I won't spoil any endings... but this movie is phenomenal. The costumes, the dialogue, the filming... all flawless.  | private feedback | |
